Smarties In Canada And The US

One of the most ubiquitous candies given out at Halloween time are what the Americans call 'Smarties'. They are called Rockets here in Canada. I always thought that was a stupid name because the candy has no resemblance to a rocket. They should have called the PUCKS up here in the Tundra.

Smarties produced by Smarties Candy Company Union Township, Union County, New Jersey, plant have a slightly different taste from the ones that are produced by their Newmarket, Ontario, plant. Some people believe that the Canadian candies (branded as Rockets) generally taste stronger, with more noticeable differences between the various color flavors, and say "Made in Canada" on the label after the list of ingredients. Canadian made Smarties are also imported into the US - typically, these Canadian Smarties are most commonly seen around Halloween, imported only when the US production is not sufficient for demand. These actually say "Made in Canada" under one of the main Smarties logos on the wrapper. These Canadian made Smarties have a slightly smoother look to them than US production - the US produced ones tend to have more colored "specks" present in them.

When we hear the word 'Smarties' we think of an etirely different candy product. Our 'Smarties' are chocolate covered in a candy coating - "melts in your mouth, not in your hands". I do prefer M & Ms but cold 'Smarties' out of the freezer are pretty sweet too.

"Rockets" made great Proton Energy Pills when playing Roger Ramjet based imagination games. Just saying.

When I was a kid, getting a couple of Rockets in your Halloween goody bag was cause for real excitement. They were so good compared to the endless river of gawdawful molasses Halloween Kisses that most people handed out.

I've always liked Smarties too.

Oh don't even mention those crappy black cat candies. They were always the LAST candy left in your bag. Horrible.

I've never known a black cat that makes a decent candy. Now calico cats do make good snickerdoodles.
