Call Me

Debbie photographed by Annie Leibovitz for Vanity Fair, February 2014

Remember kids, there would be no rap or hippity hop music without Debbie Harry. Rapture was the first rap music video. So show some respect to your magnificent elders.

Sacrilige!

Rapper's Delight was the previous year. Everyone knows that the Sugarhill Gang precedes Blondie.

Blondie were very good at seeing an existing trend and adapting it to their style, from the Disco of Heart Of Glass to the Rap of, er, Rapture. Debbie even name-checks Hip Hop stars Fab Five Freddy and Grandmaster Flash in the song. But to say there would be no Rap today without Debbie? Calvin, I think you're trying to wind us up :-)

You boys are both right. I always give Blondie her props because the song was a huge hit and made it easier for rappers to make music after her...something that we could have all done without after 30 years. I don't really like much of the music, the fact that they don't play their own instruments and wear matching pjamas. I was hoping for some backlash guys. Thanks for being relevant.

She popularized the style and made it possible for other groups to bring forward what had influence her. Not that I LIKE rap.

What is it with all you guys not liking hiphop? I'm genuinely surprised.

It really depends on the song or group. I liked Run DMC back in the day.
